On Thursday, May 7th, 2026, Pembroke Hall Primary School played host to the inaugural Duane Smith/St Andrew North West Chess Invitational, an event that brought together 176 enthusiastic young chess players from across the constituency and beyond. Participants ranged in age from 4 to 16, showcasing a remarkable diversity of talent and passion for the game.

A Gathering of Young Minds

The chess tournament attracted students not only from St Andrew North West but also from as far as St Catherine, highlighting the event's appeal and the growing interest in chess among the youth. The atmosphere was electric as participants engaged in strategic battles on the chessboard, demonstrating their skills and sportsmanship.

Prizes and Recognition

Prizes were awarded to a number of participants, celebrating their achievements and encouraging further participation in chess. My commitment to fostering talent and providing opportunities for young people was evident in the support given to this event.

"I want to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who made this event possible, especially the organizers who worked tirelessly to create a platform for our youth to showcase their talents. To all the participants, your enthusiasm and dedication to chess are truly inspiring. Keep playing, keep learning, and continue to challenge yourselves!"

Looking Ahead

The success of the inaugural Duane Smith/St Andrew North West Chess Invitational sets a promising precedent for future tournaments. I have already started marking plans for the 2027 staging of this event with hopes of making it much bigger and more structured.

With such a strong turnout and enthusiastic participation, it is clear that the love for chess is thriving in the community. Plans are already underway for next year's event, which aims to attract even more young players and foster a spirit of camaraderie and competition. As we reflect on this memorable day, it is evident that chess is more than just a game; it is a tool for developing critical thinking, patience, and resilience among our youth. The future of chess in our community looks bright, and we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in this exciting journey.

Commitment to Youth Development

As member of parliament, I remain dedicated to fostering the full development of our youth through a comprehensive approach that emphasizes both mental and physical activities. This commitment is grounded in the belief that a well-rounded development strategy is crucial for empowering young individuals to thrive in today’s society.

Support for Mental Activities

  • Promoting educational programs that enhance cognitive skills and critical thinking.

  • Encouraging participation in arts and cultural initiatives to foster creativity.

  • Facilitating access to mental health resources and support systems for youth.

Encouragement of Physical Activities

  • Investing in sports and recreational facilities to provide safe spaces for physical engagement.

  • Supporting community sports programs that promote teamwork and leadership skills.

  • Organizing health and wellness campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of physical fitness.

Through these efforts, the MP aims to create an environment where youth can explore their potential, cultivate their interests, and develop the skills necessary for their future success. The MP remains committed to collaborating with local organizations, schools, and families to ensure that every young person has the opportunity to engage in activities that promote their overall development.
