Investing in the Next Generation: North West St. Andrew’s Largest Back-to-School Tuition Ceremony

On Saturday, 5 September 2026, North West St. Andrew gathered for the annual Back-to-School Tuition Assistance Ceremony , an afternoon that was, by monetary value, the largest grant exercise this constituency has ever staged. This year, the total educational assistance allocated amounts to an impressive 13 million, with 10 million sourced from the Constituency Development Fund. This substantial support encompasses a range of grants and scholarships aimed at students across all educational levels, including primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions. Such investment in education not only empowers students but also fosters a brighter future for our communities.

More than 150 students received support toward their education. Among them were 30 recipients under the Constituency Tertiary Grant Programme, delivered through the Ministry of Education, each allocated $100,000. Assistance also reached students at the primary and secondary levels, so that the help was not confined to one stage of the school journey.

Constituency Tertiary Grant Programme

The 30 tertiary awards form the focal piece of this year’s programme. A $100,000 allocation does not erase every obstacle at university or college, but it is a substantial contribution toward registration, materials and the first stretch of the academic year. Pairing those awards with support for younger students recognises a simple truth: the pipeline has to hold at every level if more young people from this constituency are to finish what they start.

CDF Support for Tertiary Students

In addition to the 30 students who received scholarships of 100,000 dollars, we have also extended our support for tertiary level education through the Community Development Fund (CDF). This initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities and resources for students pursuing higher education.

I congratulate every recipient. The certificates and cheques are a vote of confidence in their work and in the households standing with them. I also thank everyone who came out; parents, guardians, teachers, community partners and the teams who organised the day.

To the students heading back this term: the year ahead will ask for discipline as well as ambition. Use the support well. Show up. Finish the assignments. Ask for help early. The constituency has invested in your education; the return we hope for is not a headline, but a completed year and the next one after that.

North West St. Andrew will keep putting education at the centre of its work. Saturday’s ceremony was the largest we have held by the value of the grants given. The measure that will matter more is whether those grants help more of our young people stay in school and move forward.

Congratulations again to all the recipients. I wish every student a successful and productive school year.
